Мировой океан задыхается от нефтяных разливов. Загрязненные побережья пытаются чистить, но и годы спустя продолжают обнаруживаться сгустки нефти, особенно в холодных регионах. Последствия самых разрушительных разливов ликвидируются по сегодняшний день.

1967 г.: Возле Корнуолла (Великобритания) сел на мель супертанкер Torrey Canyon. Утечка - 171 млн.литров нефти. Попытки расщепить ее химическим путем приводят к нежелательным экологическим последствиям. В международные правила морских нефтеперевозок вносятся поправки и дополнения.

1978 г.: У берегов Франции терпит крушение нефтетанкер Amoco Cadiz. Утечка - 250 млн. литров. Загрязнена береговая полоса, погибло более 20 тыс. птиц, вымирают популяции ракообразных и моллюсков.

1979 г.: Авария на буровой платформе Ixtoc I в Мексиканском заливе. Утечка продолжалась десять месяцев и составила 630 млн. литров нефти. Большая часть нефти опустилась на морское дно, часть можно обнаружить под песком побережья. Почти все крабы в регионе погибли, серьезно пострадали популяции рыб и устриц.

1979 г.: В Карибском море столкнулись два нефтеналивных танкера - Atlantic Empress и Aegean Captait. Утечка составила около 396 млн. литров нефти. Atlantic Empress взорвался и затонул. По счастливой случайности нефтяное пятно не дошло до берега.

1989 г.: На юге Аляски сел на мель танкер Exxon Valdez. Утечка составила 41 млн. литров нефти. Несмотря на очистные работы в летние сезоны 1989-1991 годов, по данным замеров 2009 года, в песке "застряло" более 3 млн. литров нефти.

1991 г.: Во время войны в Персидском заливе иракские войска организовали сброс около 1,4 млрд литров нефти. Отступая, они подожгли скважины. На "высыхание" нефтяных озер ушло десять лет. В земле по-прежнему содержится огромное количество нефти, ее расщепление займет десятилетия.

2002 г.: У берегов Испании потерпел крушение танкер Prestige. Утечка составила 77 тыс. тонн мазута, покрывшего 1 тыс. км береговой линии. Погибло около 115 тыс. птиц, сокращается численность популяций морских птиц. Рыбаки, участвовавшие в очистных работах, в 2009 году жаловались на проблемы со здоровьем.

2010 г.: Авария на буровой платформе Deepwater Horizon в Мексиканском заливе. Утечка составила около 780 млн. литров нефти. Огромные участки морского дна покрыты толстым слоем нефти. Погибли кораллы, рыбы, крабы. Сегодня поверхность воды практически полностью очищена.
